Therapy for body image issues
From eating disorders to body dysmorphia, body image issues relate directly to an individual’s self-esteem and acceptance. As such, they have traditionally been most prevalent amongst women bombarded by idealised notions of beauty, and gay men struggling with an acceptance of their sexual identity. Straight men are increasingly also struggling with these conditions however, as the pressures to conform to notions of physical perfection become ever more relentless. In my counselling sessions we provide a safe, non-judgemental space where patients can identify and explore the issues underpinning their need for absolute control over their bodies, and develop strategies for a healthier relationship with their bodies.
Private therapy for eating disorders
Psychotherapy and counselling not only allow sufferers of eating conditions to examine underlying emotional issues that may have manifested their disorder, but promote more positive perspectives, and work towards re-establishing a more positive self-esteem that can be carried forward into patients’ everyday lives. Therapy also helps patients to understand and control emotional triggers that provoke destructive body image behaviours.
Psychotherapy for dysmorphic disorders
Equal numbers of men and women experience body dysmorphic disorder (BBD). For those with this condition real or imagined physical flaws, even those barely visible or non-existent to others, become insurmountable obstacles to living a normal life.
Counselling and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) provide a safe space for individuals with BDD to discuss and analyse the emotional issues that underpin their disorder, and help them to come to terms with the emotions of discomfort they experience in relation to their perceived flaw, as they work to overcome it.
