Chemsex Addiction
Chemsex addiction is reaching epidemic proportions, particularly amongst gay and bisexual men. The growing use of hook-up apps and the cheap availability of recreational drugs has normalised drug taking within a sexual environment. This has had severe health implications not only in terms of addiction, but also in terms of a significant rise in transmission of HIV, Hep C and other sexual infections. Aligned with the physical risks of chem sex addiction, serious questions are also being raised about its psychological and neurological impacts.
Chemsex counselling
I am a trained psychologist, a gay man who has experienced the chem sex scene at first hand, and a published author on the subject. As such, I am fairly uniquely placed to offer chemsex counselling for gay and bisexual men who have a problem with chem sex addiction impacting on their everyday lives and threatening their relationships, their careers, their livelihoods and their emotional wellbeing.
Individual chem sex therapy
My therapeutic approach to sex addiction recognises that for gay and bisexual men in particular there are social pressures and identity issues that impact their choice to engage in this type of addictive behaviour. It is therefore vital that these issues are explored as part of an holistic therapy, if patients are to challenge destructive patterns of behaviour and move forward in the longer term. In my therapy I also work with clients to locate and examine their triggers for their destructive behaviours, and to understand how these can be minimised.
